Adjustable Beds – Not Just for Grandma
Back to Articles | Next Article »
Adjustable beds are those large, metal-barred concoctions with loud buzzing motors and that look like nothing if not a bulky hospital bed. Right? Wrong.
The adjustable bed market has expanded greatly in recent years; and now includes many brands and levels of quality. Many of the higher quality options boast sophisticated product lines in stylish designs.
Adjustable beds can come in several forms from a simple mattress that allows for each side’s firmness to be adjusted independently all the way to a fully automated design that elevates the head and foot portions and may contain heating and massage elements. In the middle lies a line of products where the adjustable bed fits within the users existing bed frame.
Because of the focus on home use, adjustable beds are less utilitarian than a hospital bed or that sort of “grandma” appliance - and are more decorative. Some adjustable beds even have headboards and are very hard to decipher from traditional flat beds when prone.
Unlike hospital beds in the medical field, adjustable bases are not designed to be moved. They are generally stationary and designed for long-term use in one setting as are standard bed sets. Again, their sleek designs are to be aesthetically pleasing and less for quick and easy cleaning.
But that’s not to say modern adjustable beds aren’t for grandma or those suffering ailments or injuries that make comfort in a traditional bed difficult if not impossible. Despite the importance placed on appearance, adjustable bases still provide all of the same therapeutic benefits as larger, bulkier medical devices.
The elevating mechanisms provide relief from numerous medical conditions and are a source of comfort - especially when combined with a memory foam mattress - even for those without those issues.
When considering an adjustable base purchase, don’t assume appearance has to be sacrificed. There are many appealing makes and models of adjustable bases available on an ever expanding market.
