Adjustable Beds and Back Pain

Adjustable beds are a backaches worst enemy.

Long known by medical professionals as a therapeutic resource, adjustable beds exploded onto the retail market and have never been more popular. In no small way, this is attributed to the pain relief properties of adjustable beds that are capable of elevating the foot and head areas to distribute weight and adjust body position.

Adjusting the elevation of the bed, especially the upper body, can help re-align the spine and relieve pressure that cases pain and general discomfort. Adjusting the bed also helps to more evenly distribute body weight so that soreness isn’t magnified by pressure points. All Adjustable Beds come with hand-held remote controls that allow the user to adjust the beds elevation to exactly the right position where maximum comfort is achieved. Essentially, that is like having a brand new custom-made bed every time you lay down.

Memory Foam gets its body-contouring properties from the heat sensitive nature of visco-elastic foams. Memory Foam mattresses are able to evenly distribute weight – and therefore eliminate uncomfortable pressure points – because the foam softens as body heat is applied. When the heat source is removed, Memory Foam will rebound to its original shape within minutes.

When a person is lying on a flat bed, the spine is not supported. As a result, existing back pain can actually be magnified by sleeping on a traditional bed.

Most adjustable beds, ones of higher quality at least, allow for additional options to be included at an extra cost. Two of the most popular options are heat and massage. Heat is known to soothe inflamed back muscles with penetrating warmth and massage units kneed the muscles to rub out knots. The result is reduced back pain and soreness.

Frequently, an adjustable bed are used in conjunction with a memory (or latex) foam mattress. These mattresses are well-known for their therapeutic value. The memory foam cells soften under weight and warmth so that the body “melts” into the mattress. This body contouring quality can provide instant relief from back pain by evenly distributing weight so that pressure points are eliminated.
