Adjustable Beds and Memory Foam

Adjustable beds and Memory Foam were made to go together. Both products have total comfort at the core of their design and are well-known for their therapeutic properties.

Both also have their origins in science. Adjustable Beds first were developed for hospitals as a therapeutic device for people with illnesses or injuries that required long bed stays. Memory foam was developed in the 1970s by NASA as a way to cushion astronauts from the harmful effects of the G-Forces felt at takeoff and re-entry.

Memory Foam and adjustable beds also have a common history in the medical industry. Both have been used extensively - and frequently together - in hospitals due to their therapeutic qualities and ability to relieve pain and discomfort resulting from a litany of doctor-recognized ailments and conditions.

Adjustable beds and memory foam eventually became well known for their ability to overcome the largest negative aspect of traditional flat bed innerspring mattresses - painful pressure points. It’s not the fault of flat beds; they’re just flat. Bodies are curvy and when they’re forced onto a firm surface, soreness is a guaranteed outcome. With inner springs, that discomfort is compounded by the push against the body as weight is applied.

Mattress density varies. Lower density products are less expensive to manufacture but will be the quickest to break down. The bottom layer is called the core. On top of this is a more viscous layer which can vary in thickness usually between two to six inches. Variations in density will determine softness and price point of the bed.

But all of that is absent from adjustable bed and memory foam products.

Adjustable beds allow inclination at the head and foot to alter the body position without moving. Add to that, the body contouring features of memory foam and the sleep of a lifetime is almost certainly to follow.

A quality memory foam mattress is even more important when using an adjustable bed. Innerspring beds will not properly bow in response to the inclination mechanism. Memory foam on the other hand is designed specifically to give when weight is applied - the “melting feeling” that has generated so much acclaim.
