Adjustable Beds vs. Hospital Beds

Back to Articles | Next Article »

Adjustable beds and hospital beds serve two very distinct purposes and therefore operate differently and look dissimilar. Any conception that the two are the same should be disregarded immediately.

Hospital beds are designed to be movable and easily cleaned. Because they are strictly utilitarian, hospital beds have bulky frames and are available only for use by a single person.

In contrast, modern adjustable beds are available in a number of stylish designs. Because they are made for use in a home setting, adjustable beds are generally stationary and more visually appealing. They are made not only in Twin sizes but Full, Queen, King size mattresses and other specialized sizes in some brands.

While both bed types are likely to have hand controls to operate the adjustable mechanisms, there is likely to be a large difference in their appearance and function. Hospital bed controls are likely to have only basic features and be tethered to the bed with a cable. Adjustable bed controls do come in similar simple formats, but more advanced options - such as wireless - can also be purchased at a higher cost.

Both bed varieties also provide the ability to adjust the elevation of the head and foot portions of the bed. Adjustable beds typically will offer more options in how the inclination occurs. Adjustable and hospital beds both also typically raise or lower their elevation to accommodate people with disabilities that may have trouble getting into the bed.

Adjustable beds also are available with optional features that typically are not available with hospital beds. Many adjustable bed brands carry products with optional heat and massage units that can provide added therapeutic and comfort value for the user.

Adjustable beds and hospital beds really have very little in common aside from a generalized purpose to provide relief from discomfort or for those who seek a more comfortable bed environment than a traditional flat bed can provide.
