Difference in High Quality vs. Low Quality Memory Foam
Back to Articles | Next Article »
The Memory Foam industry may have started off at a crawl, the current market has exploded and is moving at top speed as technology is developed and more and more companies offer products for sale. It can be confusing and hard to find a respectable brand.
Make no mistake; there is a broad gap between high quality and low quality Memory Foam products.
While some price fluctuation can be attributed to cover materials and other such accoutrements, quality is almost entirely dictated by density of the foam. The heavier and firmer to the touch a product is, the denser it is and therefore more expensive. In almost no situation does cheap equate to quality in the Memory Foam market.
Denser Memory Foam mattress products are more desirable because they are better able to absorb body weight to produce the much heralded “melting” feeling of Memory Foam. The denser a product is, the better it will contour the body and distribute weight evenly to relieve pressure points. Quality Memory Foam is generally considered to have a 4 lb. density or greater.
Another key indicator of a quality Memory Foam product is its rebound rate. Memory Foam is heat sensitive and absorbs weight as body heat warms the material. Once the heat source is removed, higher quality (denser) products will return to their original shape at a slower rate than lesser foams.
Each Memory Foam brand will have a unique feel and recover to its original shape at a different rate, but as a rule anything less than 4 lbs. will not properly support the body.
With the higher density, and associated comfort and relief from aches and pains, comes increased materials and production costs. Many bargain brands are mass produced with little attention to quality or even reasonable health and safety standards.
In addition, quality Memory Foam mattress products have a longer lifespan than their cheaper counterparts and will continue to over the customer a fit sleep for years to come.
