A side sleeper would be better off with one of our softer mattresses. Firm or even medium-firm mattresses don’t usually offer enough give to sufficiently cushion the shoulders and hips. So side sleepers are likely to wake up sore and stiff after sleeping on a firmer bed.

With that, side sleepers are best suited on beds with soft to medium feels, like our AS3, AS4, and AS5 mattresses. The AS3 and AS5 models are available as memory foam or hybrid mattresses, so side sleepers have five different options to consider.

No, you do not need a box spring for any of our mattresses, which is why we don’t sell them. In fact, you can damage our mattresses if you keep them on a box spring. A box spring’s inner coils don’t provide the consistent support our mattresses need, and the empty gaps between the springs can cause premature sagging.

Mattress companies use “hybrid mattress in a box” for a bed that is both a mattress-in-a-box (also known as a bed-in-a-box mattress) and a hybrid mattress.

Bed-in-a-box mattresses are packaged into compact boxes through the use of special compressors. We ship our mattresses as compact as possible for easier portability. But don’t worry, our machines flatten mattresses without damaging their materials, and all of our beds are quick to regain their true shape once unboxed.

Hybrid mattresses feature design elements from innerspring and foam mattresses. Hundreds of coils support the mattress, with every coil wrapped so that the mattress feels bouncy without jarring your body. The top layer of foam must be at least 2 to 3 inches thick. Other beds with thinner foam layers aren’t true hybrids, but rather innersprings or pillow tops.

Many experts recommend sleeping on your side. Why do they consider it healthier than sleeping on your back or stomach? One reason is that lying on your side lowers sympathetic nervous system activity, responsible for your “flight or fight” response. In other words, you relax better on your side than in any other position. Sleeping on your side also helps your brain clear out waste and may prevent neurodegenerative diseases.

Alternatively, advocates of back sleeping call it the best position for maintaining a healthy spine. When you lie on your back, your body mimics the posture you experience when you’re standing up straight. Stomach sleeping can strain your spine more than any other position, which is why most experts advise against it.

If you’re a side sleeper or want to switch to side sleeping, we recommend one of our AS3, AS4, or AS5 mattresses. These are our softer beds, and they conform well to your hips and shoulder for pressure relief. If you were to sleep on a firmer mattress, like our AS1 or AS2 models, you would wake up with aching hips and shoulders, and possibly even a sore back.

Check how supportive the memory foam mattress feels. A sagging middle or permanent indentation signifies your mattress can’t provide the support you need for a good night’s sleep and pain-free morning.

If your mattress sags, you may not have to pay to replace it. Many mattress companies will replace a memory foam bed if it sags beyond a certain point. Our warranty provides coverage for any Amerisleep mattress that sags over 0.75 inches.

You can break in a hybrid mattress by sleeping on it during the night and relaxing on it during the day. Some people find it helpful to walk across the surface of their mattress for a few minutes.

However, sometimes breaking in the mattress isn't what you need to do. Your body often needs to adjust to a new bed, not vice versa. Many of us develop poor sleeping postures from sleeping on old, unsupportive mattresses. On a new and supportive mattress, your body needs time to correct its sleeping posture.
