Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should my mattress topper be?

Mattress toppers come in a variety of thicknesses—from thin 2-inch toppers to ultra-plush 8-inch mattress toppers. However, we believe 3-inch mattress toppers are perfect for modifying the feel of your bed without causing too much sinkage because they’re thick enough to cushion the shoulders and hips in the side sleeping position, but not so thick that the hips can drop out of alignment.

The feel of a mattress topper isn’t completely determined by thickness. Other factors play into firmness, meaning shoppers can find firm and soft 3-inch mattress toppers. For example, we sell our Support Lift® and Comfort Lift®, and both are 3 inches thick; but our Support Lift® is made with buoyant Affinity foam to offer extra support, while the Comfort Lift® features softer, more contouring Bio-Pur® to provide extra softness.

What is the difference between the Comfort Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper
and the Support Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper?

The Comfort Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper provides soft cushion and the Support Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper provides firm support to your mattress.

Inside, the Comfort Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper features our Bio-Pur® material. It’s designed to deliver extra cushion, while still bouncing back fast. That way you don’t feel “stuck” if you move around at night.

For the Support Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper, we use our Affinity material. It delivers better support for individuals who prefer a firmer feel.

Both our Bio-Pur® and Affinity materials are made with an advanced open-cell design to wick away warm air and keep you cool throughout the night. They also feature our HIVE® technology to provide increased comfort and reduce pain-causing pressure points up to 49%.

How do I know which Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper is right for me?

We designed the Comfort Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper for side sleepers, combo sleepers, and anyone who wants to add more cushion to their mattress. We designed the Support Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and anyone who wants to add firm-yet-gentle support to their mattress.

How to choose a mattress topper?

You should approach shopping for a mattress topper the same way you’d approach buying a new bed. Obviously your budget will differ, but the factors you consider should be mostly the same.

First, think about why you’re buying the topper. Are you experiencing aches and pains or do you want to make your mattress firmer or softer? Then, consider how you sleep. Side sleepers with aches and pains will want a softer, thicker topper, whereas a back sleeper looking to firm up their mattress will want a firmer, thinner topper.

Lastly, think about temperature control. If you’re prone to night sweats, you’ll want to choose something breathable or with cooling technologies. If night sweats don’t bother you, your options are endless.

Will the Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper make me hot when I sleep?

No. We designed the Bio-Pur® and Affinity materials inside the Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper to keep you cool and comfortable all night. They both feature an advanced open-cell design that wicks away warm air. Plus we wrap the Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper with a soft and ultra-breathable cover.

What is Amerisleep’s HIVE® technology?

HIVE® stands for Harnessing Intelligent Ventilation and Energy. This technology provides targeted support for sensitive areas and reduces pain-causing pressure points up to 49%. HIVE® creates five comfort zones in the Lift by Amerisleep™ Mattress Topper using a pattern with hundreds of hexagons.

In the comfort zones for the head, back, and feet, the hexagons are closer together. That gives the hexagons less room to expand, providing more support for the areas that need it.

In the comfort zones for the shoulders and hips, the hexagons are further apart. That gives the hexagons more room to expand, providing more cushion for the areas that need it.

Are mattress toppers good for back and hip pain?

Mattress toppers can be a great solution for back or hip pain if the discomfort is a result of sleeping on a too-soft or too-firm mattress.

Side sleepers can experience aches and pains if their mattress is too firm. A soft mattress topper can better relieve pressure points and eliminate discomfort.

Stomach and back sleepers can experience backaches if they don’t have adequate support to keep them lifted. A firm topper can improve alignment and prevent pain.

If your mattress is sagging or lumpy, a mattress topper may not help ease aches or pains. Mattresses that have lost support can’t be fixed with a topper because the topper will just sag in the same areas as the mattress. So while it might feel a little more comfortable, it’s not a viable long-term solution. If your aches and pains stem from a sagging, worn down, or just flat-out unsupportive mattress, you’ll want to skip a mattress topper and shop for a new bed.

Can you sleep on a mattress topper right away?

Like foam mattresses that come compressed, mattress toppers will need a bit of time to take shape and be ready for use. Mattresses require a full 24 hours to completely expand and feel comfortable, but mattress toppers only need to sit for a fraction of that time. Many foam mattress toppers can be used after five or six hours.
